Arava has been linked to deadly cases of liver failure that
have been shown to occur just six months after patients start
using the rheumatoid arthritis drug. Arava was approved and
showed no increased effectiveness in treating rheumatoid arthritis.
The alternate patient treatment has been associated to six
times more cases of fatal liver toxicity and 13 times more
reports of hypertension than methotrexate, the already available
and widely used RA drug. At least 130 cases of severe liver
toxicity, including 12 deaths have now been reported to the
FDA since Arava’s approval.
